Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area is always open but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger. However, it is recommended that bushwalking only be undertaken during daylight hours because of the presence of cliff edges... you can access from many places around wollongong... bush walks are not well marked and tracks are not mantained at all, so some experience in hiking is needed.

We started this hike from the hills behind Pendleton Close and in 3 hours we only saw 1 other person. There was no rubbish, and the sounds of the birds was very enjoyable as was the unspoiled bushland. VERY steep and challenging in places and coming back down there was no choice but to skid down the track on our backsides! There was no signage at all and we went the wrong way at one point, but it really would be impossible to get too lost. Seeing the remnants of the tracks that used to carry the coal down the hill was very interesting too. All in all a great experience.

Today, I noticed this place has become a private property ! Does this mean no way to enter or hike?!
